Dakota Johnson is stepping into the Sony Spiderman Universe with her portrayal of Cassandra Webb in Madame Web. However, the role did not come without some hesitation on the actress’ part, Johnson spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her experience filming a movie that relies on CGI effects.
“I’ve never really don’t a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an OK job!”
But, Johnson had faith in the creative direction of the director of the movie, S.J. Clarkson, and would frequently check in with the director about her performance, “She [Clarkson] works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.”
Dakota Johnson went on to talk about her initial reaction to the role, “I got the script, and I was like, ‘I don’t know about me being a superhero.”
Johnson admitted she was drawn in by Cassandra’s character, which encouraged her to take the role, “I was sort of mystified by her powers. I felt like, ‘Oh, I really would love to see that superhero. I would love to see a young woman whose superpower is her mind.”
Johnson was also pleasantly surprised by her stunt driving abilities, which she did for the first time while on set for the movie, “I’m really good at it, it seems! I mean, I can do some really wild things with a car. I drove an ambulance, I drove a taxicab. I drove everything in the movie- except for flying through the air and out of a building. But other than that, I’m like, ‘Watch out, Tom Cruise.”
Madame Web is premiering in theaters February 14, 2024.
