Oscars winner, Casey Affleck, will be joined by Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel in the upcoming film, The Friend. The script is based on Matthew Teague’s award-winning article for Esquire Magazine. The film will be led by Blackfish director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite and scribed by Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace).
The indie drama tells the story of Teague (Affleck) reporting on the extraordinary relationship between Nicole (Johnson) and her best friend (Segel). After Nicole discovers she is terminally ill, her closest friend unexpectedly sidelines his own ambitions and moves into her family home to provide extraordinary support. The experience exemplifies the beauty and tragedy within humanity’s expression of life, mortality, and love.
When asked about the adaptation of his article, Teague stated, “[The Friend] captures what’s at the heart of the story: deep love and loss, and the saving grace of friendship. To have the talents of Dakota Johnson, Jason Segel and Casey Affleck help the story live on is remarkable. And I’m grateful to Scott Free and Black Bear, who have been both passionate and sensitive from day one. I hope the story gives people an honest glimpse of what it means to face mortality, and the value of having a true friend at your side, when that moment comes.”
The Friend will be produced by Black Bear Pictures. The drama is set to begin production on location in Fairhope, AL next month. Black Bear Pictures has not yet announced a release date for the highly anticipated motion picture. This news was originally reported by Deadline.
