Cynthia Erivo to Star Alongside Viola Davis in ‘Widows’

According to Variety, Cynthia Erivo,  who won Tony Award for her Broadway performance in the musical The Color Purple, will join Viola Davis (Suicide Squad) in Steve McQueen’s (12 Years Slave) new heist thriller, WidowsThe film will be based on the 1983 British miniseries about a heist gone wrong. The story centers around four armed robbers who are killed in a failed criminal attempt, and only their widows can finish the job.

Author of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn, will pen the script for McQueen. McQueen who is set to direct will also produce alongside Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See Saw Films. They worked together on McQueen’s, Shame, and also worked together to produce the Oscar winning film, The King’s Speech.

Widows will be McQueen’s return to directing after his best picture Academy award for 12 Years a Slave. Since then, he has been working on the HBO series, Codes of Conduct. 

Cynthia Erivo has had an occurring role in the PBS show Mr. Selfridge.
