Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has given her thoughts on whether audiences should sing in the cinema. Moviegoers have been in a very heated debate on movie theater etiquette since the movie came to theaters Nov. 22.
While appearing in an interview at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC, host Hoda Kotb asked Erivo if it was OK to sing along in theaters. Erivo answered, “Good. I’m OK with it. We spent this long singing it ourselves — it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”
After Wicked was released in theaters, fans have been split on the idea of singing in theaters. A few theaters have included signs to stop fans from singing. There has also been news of audience members yelling at one another to stop singing and let others enjoy the movie. Fans who want to sing are told to wait for the sing-along screenings of the movie, coming this December 25.
Movie musicals and concert movies are more prominent these days, so people have become more comfortable with singing in theaters. This was seen in Taylor Swift’s concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, where she told fans singing in theaters was acceptable.
Erivo, Taylor Swift and other celebrities like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have all said singing in theaters is fine. However, many fans have expressed that singing-along ruins the experience and is inconsiderate. This is why waiting for sing-along movie screenings is better for those who like to sing during the movie.
Wicked is in theaters now.
