Christy, the Christy Martin Biopic, premiered on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Sydney Sweeney as famed female boxer Christy Martin and follows her rise in female boxing from her small-town roots in West Virginia. It premiered to mixed reviews, with many critics saying it was largely derivative of most boxing dramas. However, critics have praised Sweeney’s lead performance.
Indiewire’s review, written by Kate Erbland, says that Sweeney “disappears into the role, not just changing her hair color, eye color, accent, and way of moving, but her general air, her overall mien, the space she takes up in a room.” The New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski calls Sweeney’s performance a “knockout” and states that the film is “a major step to showing there’s much more to her than rom-com.”
Many reviews are especially mixed, with equal praise for Sweeney’s performance and critiques of its derivative feel. In his review for The Daily Beast, Nick Schager wrote that Sweeney “gives a believable performance that almost transcends her role’s derivativeness. This manipulative hybrid of Rocky, Million Dollar Baby, and Monster, however, is so rote that even an A.I. wouldn’t dare try to pass it off as original.” Chase Hutchinson was similarly mixed on the film, writing for The Wrap that the film “succeeds about half the time, making for a split decision where Sweeney and Christy both emerge as champions while the film itself can’t quite go the distance.”
Christy will be released in theaters by Black Bear Pictures on November 7th.
