Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be another Rocky sequel, MGM comes out with a seventh installment of the popular boxing franchise–sort of. Instead of doing a sequel, prequel or remake, the studio has decided to make a spinoff entitled Creed. [Spoiler Alert] Due to Apollo Creed’s death in the ring in Rocky IV, he will not be present in the spinoff. Rather, his grandson will be the focus of the story.
Creed will reunite Fruitvale Station actor/director duo Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler. Jordan will play Apollo Creed’s grandson, raised in a wealthy, priviledged home due to his grandfather’s success, but with the gifts to become a great boxer in his own right. He looks to Creed’s opponent-turned-friend Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to be his trainer and mentor.
Director Ryan Coogler will also write the screenplay along with Aaron Covington. Creed is reportedly a passion project for Coogler, who plans to build upon the mythology of the original films.
Creed will be produced by Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler, both of whom produced the original Rocky film, as well as by Sylvester Stallone and Kevin King.
