Corsican Goatherd Vs. Mafia: ‘The Mohican’ Scores International Distribution

Frédéric Farrucci’s drama The Mohican, which premiered in the Horizons Extra section of the Venice Film Festival, has secured distribution deals across several territories.

Brussels-based sales agency Be For Films announced the agreements, which include Frenetic Films for Switzerland, Splendid Film for Germany and Austria, Edge Entertainment for Scandinavia, One From the Heart for Greece and Imovision for Brazil. Discussions are ongoing for additional deals in regions such as Benelux, Australia, the U.S. and Japan. French distributor Ad Vitam will handle the film’s release in France.

The Mohican tells the story of Joseph, one of the last remaining goatherds on the Corsican coastline, who faces pressure from the Mafia to give up his land. When Joseph refuses and inadvertently kills the man sent to intimidate him, he becomes the target of a relentless manhunt that stretches across Corsica. The film follows Joseph’s struggle to survive and his transformation into a symbol of resistance, amplified by his niece Vannina, who spreads his story across the island.

Farrucci drew inspiration for the film from a 2017 documentary he directed about a shepherd on Corsica’s southern coast.

“He saw himself as an anomaly in his region, much like the last of the Mohicans,” Farrucci said.

The cast is led by Alexis Manenti, supported by Mara Taquin, Pietri Théo Frimigacci, Paul Garatte and Marie-Pierre Nouveau. The film was produced by Céline Chapdaniel and Diane Jassem under the banner of Koro Films.

Pamela Leu, of Be For Films, expressed excitement about the response following the film’s Venice premiere, noting, “We were fascinated by the feedback gathered from the industry and buyers right after the premiere in Venice. A very well-crafted and tense feature, lifted by Alexis Manenti’s perfect acting.”

Leu will continue promoting the film at the upcoming MIA film market in Rome.
