Production company Mubi has recently fallen under fire from others within the film industry, thanks to their ties to investor Sequoia Capital. In the midst of the turmoil, the CEO of MUBI, Efe Cakarel, has put out an official response to the conflict at hand.
Sequoia has recently cemented itself as picking the side of Israel in the ongoing conflict between them and Gaza. Sequoia helped Kela to get off the ground, which was used as a method to strengthen the defense of Israel.
The partnership with Sequoia caused a slew of directors to address MUBI directly, per Hollywood Reporter, to show their displeasure with their collaboration. They did not mince words in saying that the success of MUBI, and thus the success of the directors involved with MUBI, are tied to the genocide taking place in Gaza. They also stated that, thanks to their relationship with Sequoia, MUBI cannot properly uphold support to those who are making films or are passionate about films.
In his response, Cakarel made it clear that he does not stand for any of the events happening in Gaza, condemning the actions taken against innocents on behalf of the company. Right after, he addressed the perceptions that their ties to Sequoia mean they don’t stand against what is happening.
These accusations are fundamentally at odds with the values we hold as individuals and as a company,” he said in his statement, acquired thanks to Hollywood Reporter.
MUBI’s ties with Sequoia have also been made clear to be with the limited partners tied to Sequoia. Cakarel indicated that these limited partners include specifically universities and foundations. He added, as well, that Sequoia has very little control over any dealings that happen at MUBI, which also includes Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire having no ties whatsoever to them.
