News regarding the long awaited sequel to the Horror/Superhero film Constantine has just landed, thanks to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
A follow-up to the 2005 film had been in talks over the last couple years, with original stars Keanu Reeves, Tilda Swinton, & Rachel Weisz and director Francis Lawrence each attached to return over various development phases. Lorenzo di Bonaventura had also acted as producer on the original film, which stars Reeves in the title role as a brooding supernatural exorcist John Constantine.
While fans of the original wait anxiously, ComicBook has learned in an exclusive conversation with di Bonaventura that a finished Constantine 2 script does in fact exist in his possession, but he’s put a delay on reading it for now.
“You know, it’s in my inbox right now,” he says. “Funny enough I’m too scared to read it, though. I want it to be good so bad. I probably read it in the next few days. When I get on an airplane.”
That’s all di Bonaventura’s let on for now, which means no word regarding whether or not Constantine 2 exists as a part of James Gunn’s developing DC Cinematic Universe. Superhero powerhouse DC has pumped out several heavy hitters amongst recent years, including a few entries that exist in universes entirely their own. Notably, Todd Phillips’ Joker and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and their respective upcoming sequels, do not coincide with Gunn’s rebooted timeline. It’s safe to assume once a Constantine sequel is made, it will keep continuity with it’s own timeline and embrace fans back to the world of the cult-classic that graced movie screens almost two decades ago.
