The highly anticipated sci-fi adventure Divergent, adapted from Veronica Roth’s world-wide best selling young-adult trilogy (including Insurgent and Allegiant), is building up excitement with a new full-length trailer released this week.
Divergent is based on a futuristic society in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, where people are profiled into one of five virtue based factions – honesty, selflessness, bravery, peace-loving, or cultivated. Star Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now, The Descendants) plays the heroine, Tris Prior. Tris doesn’t fit in; she possesses more than one trait – a divergent, a threat to society.
Director Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist) is keeping the action scenes up close and personal with as little use of CGI as possible, giving the film an in-your-face-grittiness of reality. Theo James (Golden Boy, Downton Abbey) plays Four, Tris’s love interest and warrior comrade. Kate Winslet (Titanic, Revolutionary Road) stars as the power hungry Jeanine Mathews, a chilling and icy authoritarian leader, intent on eradicating anyone that divides the society.
The adapted screenplay is by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor. Lionsgate will distribute along with Summit Entertainment and Red Wagon Studios. Lucy Fisher, Pouya Shabazian and Douglas Wick are producing.
Zoe Kravitz (After Earth, X-Men: First Class), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard, TV’s Nikita), and Ashley Judd (Missing, Double Jeopardy) also star.
Aiming to attract dystopia-loving audiences, a Divergent trailer will be attached to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire when it is released November 22. Divergent in IMAX, is due in theaters March 21, 2014.
