Common has officially joined the cast of Barbershop 3, the sequel to the 2002 and 2004 movies. Though it’s been more than ten years since Barbershop 2, Common is joining several returning cast members for the movie.
Common joins Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer, both reprising their roles from the previous two movies, as well as other stars including Queen Latifah and Nicki Minaj (whose contracts have not been confirmed and are still in negotiations). The movie is being directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Welcome Home, Roscoe Jones) and is being written by Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver. The movie is being produced through Ice Cube’s company Cube Vision and distributed by MGM.
The original movies in the series, Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business, followed the lives of those in and around a barbershop on the South Side of Chicago. Common was not involved in the original two movies, and is currently working on the movies Suicide Squad and Hunter Killer. Common’s resume has only been improving since his Oscar win for Best Original Song for the movie Selma.
Barbershop 3 is currently in pre-production and a release date has not been announced.
