Nimrods debuted at TIFF and with an upcoming summer 2026 release, a trailer has arrived. The film is set to star Mason Thames, Ryan Frost, Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, and Angela Kinsey.
Debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival under a different name, New Years Rev, the film will follow a young band that falsely believes they are opening for popular band Green Day on New Year’s Eve. The trio embarks on a journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles to seize this opportunity, emulating the trials and tribulations of the real life Green Day before the band dropped their album Dookie. Said album went on to find success at the 1994 Grammy’s, putting them on the map and eventually being double-diamond certified.
Director Lee Kirk also provided the script in collaboration with the band, with Nimrods referencing 1997’s now double platinum album, Nimrod. Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool served as producers, with Tim Perell of Process also being credited. Executive producing is Jonathan Daniel, as well as Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino of Live Nation Studios. This is not amongst director Kirk’s first interactions with New Day, with him also having directed band front man Billie Joe Armstrong in 2016’s Ordinary World. In an interview with THR, Armstrong expressed, “I’ve always wanted to do a Green Day film.”
Nimrods is set to hit theaters on August 14, be sure to watch the full trailer below.
