The third time may really be the charm. Spider-Man is getting another reboot next summer with actor Tom Holland filling in the tights previously worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. With some of the pressure perhaps off, considering Holland’s debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man was so warmly greeted by critics and fans earlier this summer in Captain America: Civil War, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming presentation at Comic-Con could simply bask in fan goodwill rather than having to itself too much.
Yet based on reactions, this may be a big, giant hit in its own regard as Marvel showed early footage to the Hall H crowd. No footage from the Marvel panel is currently available online but, by all accounts, Holland and director Jon Watts (Cop Car) both received hero’s welcomes for this newer and younger-skewering iteration of the famed webslinging tale. Especially important to note is that this first-seen footage comes from film that’s only been in production for about ten days, so this is early days still, but perhaps stokes Marvel’s confidence in the property as well as the excitement of fans as the character is now an integral part of the MCU fray.
The teaser echoed vibes of a John Hughes movie, as Watts described the film as “a straight up high school movie.” Albeit one it which the lead is a superhero. Peter Parker’s “nerdiness” as well as his inability to connect with girls and friends may perhaps be a part of the larger narrative of Spider-Man: Homecoming, even though a brief tease showcased and revealed that the Big Bad this time out will indeed be The Vulture, as speculated, to be played by Michael Keaton, who was not at the Comic-Con presentation.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently in production and is set to open in theaters on July 7, 2017.
