Media and entertainment company Story Kitchen is developing a film adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The upcoming video game is being developed by Sandfall Interactive, who is also working on the film. The game follows a group of young heroes embarking on a journey to stop the evil Paintress, a god-level being who can kill every one of whichever number she paints in the sky. She only paints one number per year, so the team must stop her before she erases yet another generation of humanity.
The game is a party-based action RPG with turn-based combat and timed button inputs. In the game, you and your party must traverse a fantasy world inspired by the French Belle Époque era, slaying monsters and meeting new allies along the way. The highly anticipated game is set to be released on April 24 for PS5, Xbox, PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
In an interview with Variety, Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg said, “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen. The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”
The game features voice actors such as Charlie Cox, Ben Starr, and Andy Serkis. Casting for the film has not been announced, so there is no guarantee they will reprise their roles.
Story Kitchen has a history of working with video game adaptations. They had a hand in developing the Sonic the Hedgehog films, multiple Tomb Raider adaptations for Netflix and Amazon MGM as well as an upcoming adaptation of It Takes Two.
