Murder mysteries never get old but combine that with a period-piece setting, and you are in for quite the thrill. Director Scott Cooper and Christian Bale reunite for the third time (following Out of the Furnace and Hostiles) to bring us The Pale Blue Eye. Based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Louis Bayard, the story involves a detective investigating a series of murders at the infamous West Point Military Academy in 1830. Not only is the detective leading the investigation, but he is also aided by the iconic writer himself, Edgar Allen Poe.
Christian Bale stars as Detective Augustus Landor, while Harry Melling portrays the infamous writer himself. The supporting cast will include Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Timothy Spall, and the legendary Robert Duvall. Both Cooper and Bale are producing the film, with Cooper writing the screenplay. The movie will be released in theaters starting December 23 in a limited release. Netflix will release the film exclusively on its streaming service on January 6, 2023.
From the looks of the trailer, The Pale Blue Eye promises to be a dark, captivating thriller led by the always-compelling Christian Bale. Howard Shore will serve as the film’s composer.
