The Saw franchise never seems to end, with the next movie in this horror series, Saw 9: The Organ Donor set for May 15, 2020. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who has directed a total of four movies in the series, Saw 9 will feature comedian Chris Rock as a police detective investigating a bunch of seriously gruesome crimes. The reboot will also be based off of an original story by Rock and align closer to a spinoff than a sequel.
One unique addition is that Rock’s Saw reboot will definitely have some humor, which is no surprise given the actor’s stand-up comedy background. Previous Saw movies have not been known for their comedy, tending to focus more on the psychological thrill and drama of antagonist Jigsaw’s twisted, violent games. However, despite having humor, the reboot will not go into parody territory toward horror genre cliches like the Scary Movie franchise.
According to a report from IGN, Rock reveals his purpose for adding humor into the script: “A lot of times I go to a movie or I watch a TV show and I go, ‘Wow, you know, two jokes would have made a big difference in that.’” Rock explained. “I love Saw, but I was like ‘wow, it has almost no humor at all.’ So, it seemed like a good place…good fertile ground…by the way, the new Saw, I’ve seen like a rough cut. It’s still Saw…it’s bloody, it’s gory, but there’s like a sprinkling of humor here and there. We’re not revamping it, it’s not Scary Movie, it’s Saw.”
Fans of the franchise need not worry. Saw 9 will still have its trademark graphic death scenes, traps, gore, and mind games that make the audience grimace, yet still enjoy.
