Amazon MGM has unveiled a new thriller film in development that is being directed by Patrick Vollrath and starring Chris Hemsworth. The story will follow a Naval commander played by Hemsworth, who is blackmailed into piloting a submarine carrying illegal cargo. Along the way he must deal with threats both in and out of the submarine all while attempting to get out from under the thumb of a nefarious organization. The film has been described as “Die Hard on a submarine.”
Patrick Vollrath made his feature-length directorial debut in 2019 with the Amazon MGM film 7500. The film, which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was also a thriller, this time set on an airplane. It seems that Amazon has once again called upon Vollrath to direct a similar feeling thriller.
Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to roles such as this. He has starred in multiple action-thrillers in recent years, specifically for Netflix. Extraction, Extraction 2, and Spiderhead are all Netflix films where he played a similar character archetype. We last saw Hemsworth last year voicing Orion Pax in Transformers One as well as playing the maniacal villain Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Hemsworth is busy, with the Amazon thriller Crime 101 scheduled to release in 2026. Additionally, filming for Avengers: Doomsday has just begun, with Chris Hemsworth confirmed to reprise his role as Thor. Subversion currently has no release window but is currently in pre-production.
