Like a leviathan emerging from the depths, In The Heart Of The Sea, an adventure movie from 2015, has recently resurfaced near the top of the charts on Netflix, Screen Rant reports. Based on the best-selling book by Nathaniel Philbrick and directed by Ron Howard, the film tells the true story of the ship Essex and its sinking by a sperm whale, which would go on to inspire the classic Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Made for a budget of $100 million, the film would end up grossing only $94 million and was poorly received by critics, quickly becoming forgotten. However, this changed this past week as it has since climbed to the number 2 spot on Netflix’s daily top 10 movie chart, only behind Netflix’s own Carry-On, mirroring its placement behind Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2 during its original release.
Described as “old-fashioned” by Rotten Tomatoes, the film sports a strong cast led by Chris Hemsworth as veteran whaler Owen Chase and Tom Holland as cabin boy Thomas Nickerson, with Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, and Benjamin Walker in supporting roles. Best known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hemsworth and Holland have continued to branch out in their work, with Hemsworth starring in the action-packed Extraction and Holland joining various projects, including Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. Murphy has also had booming success, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in last year’s Oppenheimer.
The film has since taken the number one spot on the list as of this writing.
