Even though Pixar has ended the Toy Story franchise last year with Toy Story 4, it is actually not the last time we’ll see Andy’s toys on another adventure. During the Disney investor meeting, Pixar announced that a new spin off feature film in development featuring everyone’s favorite Space Ranger. As a Buzz Lightyear prequel film known as Lightyear has been announced with Chris Evans set to voice the iconic member of Star Command.
The film will be an origins story that focuses on the test pilot that was ended up inspiring the famous toy in the fictional universe of Toy Story. The project will be helmed by Finding Dory co-director, Angus Maclane. Not much else has been announced about the upcoming film outside of Chris Evans involvement and a promotional image showcasing the character. No word if Tim Allen, the original Buzz Lightyear star will be involved in this upcoming project.
Certainly a different take on a spin-off project, though a welcomed change of pace in terms of how to reintroduce iconic characters for another big movie. Rather than them making a straight up sequel to Toy Story 4, we get a new look into the world of Toy Story and one of its most iconic characters. With it focusing on Buzz Lightyear, hopefully longtime Toy Story fans could even get some nods to the 2000s animated series, Buzz Lightyear Star Command in the mix as well. With other Pixar spin-off projects being announced alongside this, proves that Pixar still will provide new content featuring some of their most iconic characters.
Lightyear is set for released on June 17th 2022
