Chris Evans on the Fence About Returning to Play Captain America

During a Variety interview segment titled Actors on Actors, Chris Evans spoke to his Marvel film costar Scarlett Johansson about the future of his role as Captain America and seemed hesitant to say he’d come back to the role.

Post-Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans has no current plans to return to the role he played since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Endgame wrapped up Steve Rogers’ arch when his character decided to go back to the 1940’s and live out his days with Peggy Carter. In the present timeline, an elderly Rogers handed his shield to Sam Wilson/Falcon(Anthony Mackie), thus passing down the torch.

In the interview, Johansson asked if Evans would consider a return to the role and his reply was “You never say never… It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. There’s other things I’m working on right now… I think Cap had such a tricky arc to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey.” If they were to try to bring him back, Evans has some questions before it begins: “What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story?” To conclude, however, Evans stated that it “doesn’t feel, at this time, like that would be the thing that I’d be looking to do, no.”

We’ll sure miss Captain America as the Marvel Universe continues with new stories but we hope to see some version of the character soon, albeit without expense to Evans. It seems best to let ourselves simmer in the sweet sendoff that Steve Rogers was given in Endgame.
