Chloë Sevigny wants to reprise one of her roles, but not the one you would think.
After it was reported that Luca Guadagnino would direct a new feature adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel American Psycho, Sevingy made her interest evident to the director. Sevingy portrayed Patrick Bateman’s (Christian Bale) secretary, Jean, in the 2000s adaptation, directed by Mary Harron.
She spoke with Indiewire on Friday about her pitch to Guadagnino for a way to reprise her role, saying, “I pitched to him that I should play Jean again and that they do that reverse-aging on me. I thought that would be something that he would be into, conceptually having the same actress play the same part.” But seemingly, he shot the idea down as Sevingy continued, “He said he was going to think of something else for me.”
There hasn’t been any confirmation on who will be playing Jean as well as the lead, Patrick Bateman. Various actors’ names have floated around as to who will play Bateman, including Austin Butler and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Kerry Barden, the original feature’s casting director, told The Hollywood Reporter that he thought Butler would be better suited to the role of Paul Allen, originally played by Jared Leto. “I would cast Austin in Jared’s role because he’s that beautiful, and that’s why we cast Jared, is because he’s that beautiful.”
There has been no direct response from Butler, but Schwarzenegger responded to a fan’s comment on X on April 30th, stating that they have found Schwarzenegger’s “breakout role.” Schwarzenegger replied, “I’d love nothing more,” accompanied by a winking emoticon.
There has been no release date for Guadagnino’s adaptation, but he will be directing from a script written by Scott Z. Burns.
