You may remember back in June we brought you news of Jim Carrey’s criticism of the violence in the new film Kick-Ass 2. Carrey, who plays Colonel Stars and Stripes, announced via twitter that in light of the elementary school shooting at Sandy Hook he could no longer support the movie and refused to do publicity for it. Until recently much of the cast has remained quiet about the matter. However in an interview Chloe Grace Moretz, who stars as Hit Girl, defended the movie against Carrey’s comments.
Moretz stated that while she respected Carrey’s viewpoint, it is the audience’s responsiblitiy to discern between film and reality. She argued that if action movies moved a viewer to violence, then they should stay away from movies such as Pocahontas or Silence of the Lambs because they could be swayed to believe they were a Disney princess or a serial killer. Moretz added, “It’s a movie and it’s fake, and I’ve known that since I was a kid…I don’t want to run around trying to kill people and cuss. If anything, these movies teach you what not to do.”
While Moretz was critcal of Carrey’s comments, Mark Millar, who created the source material and serves as a producer for the film, could not be happier. He believes Carrey’s comments will draw greater publicity and a larger audience to the film than was previously possible. Millar stated, “For your main actor to publicly say, ‘This movie is too violent for me’ is like saying, ‘This porno has too much nudity. We’ll have to go and see this now.'”
While his metaphor of Kick-Ass 2 as a porno might say much more about the film than he intended, we will have a chance to see if his predictions hold true when the film is released on August 16.
