Comedy duo Cheech & Chong have etched themselves into the history of American pop culture since their 1978 film, Up In Smoke, became a huge hit with audiences. Nearly 50 years later, director David Bushell is putting together a documentary to chronicle the duo’s history.
The initial idea for the film, dubbed Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie, was for it to be a new narrative feature for the duo, but it gradually evolved into a documentary. Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie is set to make its debut at the 2024 SXSW festival, akin to how Up In Smoke broke out at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film will chronicle the lives and careers of both Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, starting from their early lives, up to their comedy career, and the ups and downs of their partnership together.
As Hollywood Reporter points out, Bushell intended to ask the duo about the multiple times they parted ways through their career, but didn’t tell them beforehand. Bushell read both of their respective biographies, and reportedly intended to use the conflict as the driving force to frame the film’s final act.
Chong mentioned how they weren’t prepared, but followed it up with a joke, saying “we’re not prepared for anything, anyway.”
“The most important thing for me, that I got out of this process, is that everybody got to say their piece, and nobody died,” Martin added, after elaborating on how they encountered those types of talks before Bushell sat down with them.
