Hot off J.J. Abrams (Star Trek Into Darkness) having the highest grossing movie of 2015 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Paramount surprised movie fans this past weekend with a trailer for the unexpected sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane.
The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Spectacular Now) as Michelle, a woman who wakes up in a bomb shelter after a car accident. The shelter is owned by an unknown character played by John Goodman (Trumbo) who claims to have saved her from a chemical attack that makes the outside world uninhabitable. John Gallagher Jr. (HBO’s The Newsroom) also stars in the movie.
While the film is a sequel to Cloverfield, none of the previous film’s characters or actors have been confirmed to appear in the film. The trailer also shows the film will be in a very different style from the original which was a found-footage film made to look like it was shot with a handheld camera. The trailer points to a much steadier camera this time around.
While Abrams is back on as a producer, Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) will not be returning to direct with Dan Trachtenberg making this his directorial debut. Trachtenberg previous drew notice for directing the short Portal: No Escape, based on the popular video game.
10 Cloverfield Lane opens March 11. You can watch the trailer below.
