The first trailer has premiered for Queen of Katwe. The film was directed by Mira Nair (The Namesake) and stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years Slave), David Oyelowo (Selma) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga. William Wheeler penned the screenplay based on the novel of the same name by Tim Crothers.
Based on a true story, Queen of Katwe tells the story of a young girl from Uganda who trains to become a world chess champion. Significantly, it’s the first film to feature Nyong’o in the flesh since winning the Academy Award for her breakout performance in Steve McQueen’s harrowing 2013 drama 12 Years a Slave. Although the actress appeared via motion capture in the recent blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens and can be heard in the current blockbuster The Jungle Book.
