The latest trailer for Natalie Portman‘s drama, A Tale of Love and Darkness has been released. The trailer features English subtitles and vibrantly stunning cinematography from Director of Photography, Slawomir Idzia (Black Hawk Down, Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix).
This is Portman’s feature directorial debut, adapting Amos Oz’s memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness. The film is set around the relationship between a young mother, Fania Oz (Portman) and her son Amos (Amir Tessler), amidst a terrifying war. Throughout the film, Fania distracts her son through creative storytelling as the world crumbles around them.
A Tale of Love and Darkness premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2015 and was acquired by Focus World later that year. Portman originally optioned the rights to the book more than eight years ago and wrote the script, insisting her adaptation remained in Hebrew. The authentic feel you get while watching the trailer is all thanks to Portman, who worked tirelessly to eliminate all traces of her American accent. Cannes reviewers, though not totally taken by the film, lauded it for its earnestness. This will be the first feature that Portman, born in Jerusalem, speaks in the foreign language. Makram Khoury, Gilad Kahana, Neta Riskin and Shira Haas also co-star.
A Tale of Love and Darkness will be in theaters August 19th. Enjoy the trailer below.
