Paramount Pictures has released the first red band trailer and poster for the upcoming Mark Wahlberg (Lone Survivor) casino-flick The Gambler. To refresh your memory, the story follows Jim Bennett (Wahlberg) as a literature professor moonlighting as a high-stakes gambler who gets caught up on the wrong side of a scheme involving creditors and gangsters.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Escapist) and written by William Monahan (The Departed), the film is set to premiere at AFI Fest next month, with a U.S. release on December 19th, right on time for possible awards season recognition.
The poster’s standalone image of Wahlberg reveals Bennett as a mostly disheveled character with something potentially up his sleeve. The trailer depicts his main challenge to be at the hands of John Goodman (Argo), playing Bennett’s loan shark pal, who sets the underground gambling tone as a world defined by “f**k you.” Counterbalancing that gritty world are his mother, played by Jessica Lange (Big Fish), and his student along for the ride, portrayed by Brie Larson (The Spectacular Now).
