District 9 and Elysium director Neil Blomkamp’s upcoming film Chappie is the story of a robot raised by a couple of criminals. The film’s new poster gives us a glimpse of the mechanical title character and his off-beat family life. The chap’s adoptive parents are played by South African rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser (of the band, Die Antwoord), reportedly as themselves – note Chappie’s drawings of his “Mommy” and “Daddy” have the letters “N” and “Y” on them, signifying their characters’ names matching their own.Of course, “themselves” could just mean their screen personas just match their real selves’ personalities – after all, the official plot summary refers to the characters as “criminals” rather than rappers.
Alongside the rap duo and Chappie’s voice actor, Sharlto Copely (constant Blomkamp collaborator) are some more recognizable Hollywood faces, including Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Sigourney Weaver (Exodus: Gods and Kings), Dev Patel (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).
As we previously reported, Ninja and Visser finished filming their scenes in April. Chappie is set for release on March 6th, next year.
