You may not be able to tell from the rather soft marketing, but powerhouse couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have a new movie set to open in theaters in two weeks time. By the Sea, a lush 1970s-set romantic melodrama, finds the second cinematic pairing for the couple– both worked together previously one decade ago on the summer blockbuster Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Jolie also writes and directs the feature.
The second trailer for By the Sea is likely even more mystifying on terms of plot and character than the first trailer for the Universal Pictures movie, which released a few months back. The trailer opens with the 1970s iteration of the Universal logo for starters and thumps along with a wordless montage showcasing the beauty of the Oscar-winning stars (she won for Girl, Interrupted, he as one of the producers of 12 Years a Slave) and the films’ French coastal setting. Mélanie Laurant (Inglorious Basterds) and Melvil Poupaud (Time to Leave) co-star but are missing in action from trailer number two.
On terms of the beauty of the film itself, Jolie as a filmmaker has surrounded herself with a sharp behind the scenes team. Oscar nominated cinematographer Christian Berger (The White Ribbon) and Emmy winning costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (Behind the Candelabra) are but a few of the talents off screen. Jolie previously directed Unbroken (also for Universal) and the 2011 war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey.
By the Sea will open AFI Fest on November 5th before opening theatrically on November 13th. Check out the trailer below.
