Entertainment Weekly premiered photos of a barely recognizable Cate Blanchett as Thor: Ragnarok’s next villain have recently been released to the public. Blanchett is to play Hela, the Goddess of Death, who upon being freed from her imprisonment seeks out revenge on those who put her there.

A lot of attention is being brought to the fact that this will be the first female villain in the Thor franchise, but we’re not sure why. Blanchett commented on this by saying, “Can you believe we’re having this conversation and it’s 2017 and we’re talking about the first female villain?” Sure, this would be unbelievable if Thor: Ragnarok wasn’t only the third installment in the series. Should comic book movies trade off each villain’s gender with every other release? It seems as though many of these journalists may have meant to state that this is the first female villain to be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which if you exclude Mystique, Psylocke, and Jean Grey as Phoenix we think this may be accurate. Granted, the aforementioned characters weren’t exactly their respective film’s main adversaries, or even entirely villainous. At any rate, it’s always uplifting to witness more of any underrepresented group on the big screen
Images of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and franchise newcomers Jeff Goldblum (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Tessa Thompson (Creed) were also released along with Blanchett’s. Hemsworth appears to have received a serious makeover as Thor, ditching the long mane and hammer for a much shorter cut and dual swords. While Goldblum kind of looks like he belongs on that council from the end of Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.
