In 2013, director David Lowery and stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara made a small indie splash with the contemplative, gorgeously rendered outlaw picture Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. Four years have passed and all three have experienced major career highlights – Lowery made a stark about face by directing the well-liked Disney re-imagining of Pete’s Dragon last year, Affleck picked up an Oscar for his commanding and sensitive turn in last year’s Manchester by the Sea and Mara has cemented her indie it girl status with acclaimed turns including her Oscar-nominated role in Todd Haynes’ Carol. All three reunite for A Ghost Story, for which a trailer debuted today.
The film – which was shot in secret – made its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to wide acclaim and was picked up for distribution by A24 Films shortly before the festival. The mournful, meditative films posits itself as a sort of romantic mystery in following a grieving wife (Mara) confronted by a startling white-sheeted ghost who happens to appears in her suburban home. Lowery scripted the film as well as directed.
Check out the first trailer for A Ghost Story below. The film opens on July 7th.
