With the success of James Wan’s 2010 horror film Insidious and its 2013 followup Insidious: Chapter 2, all audiences had to do was wait to see what a third chapter of the franchise would be like. Well, the wait is over; Insidious: Chapter 3‘s trailer is out.
Much like the recently released Annabelle – the followup to another of Wan’s successful horror films, The Conjuring – the third film will be a prequel to the original. Also much like Annabelle, Wan will not be returning to direct Chapter 3. Instead, Leigh Whannell, who wrote the first two films and played the character Specs, and collaborated with Wan on many of his other projects (including Saw and Dead Silence) will be sitting in the director’s chair. Whannell also reassumed his scriptwriting and acting duties. Along with Whannell, cast members Lin Shaye and Angus Sampson are also returning.
Despite the slight changing of the guard, Chapter 3 doesn’t appear to have veered too far from the Insidious formula. Motifs of the series, like red rooms, seances, and the Tiny Tim song, “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” (though it’s a cover), show up in the trailer.
Insidious: Chapter 3 is set for release May 29, 2015.
