Check Out the First Official Trailer for ‘True Story’

The first official trailer for Fox Searchlight’s True Story, a 2015 Sundance selection, has dropped online. The James Franco (127 Hours) and Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) starrer is based on the memoir of disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel, whose identity had been taken on by an accused murderer. The timing of the trailer’s landing is interesting in light of the recent controversy regarding Franco’s The Interview being pulled from theaters in the fallout of the recent Sony hacks.

The film stars Hill as Finkel, whose fall from grace as Times reporter came from creating composite characters in a story about slavery in Africa. Franco portrays Christian Longo, a murder suspect who has been living as a fugitive in Mexico using Finkel’s identity, and who refuses to speak with anyone but Finkel after he is captured. Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Ethan Suplee (American History X), and Gretchen Mol (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) round out the cast.  English director Rupert Goold makes his feature debut, from a script by David Kajganich (Blood Creek) based on Finkel’s memoir True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa. The film is set to premiere at Sundance in January, with an anticipated April 2015 U.S. release.
