While we are still waiting for the end of the 2015 awards season with the airing of the Academy Awards Ceremony, studios are already readying the 2016 fall release slate. This time Pathé International has released a new image from the romantic drama A United Kingdom, to Entertainment Weekly.
Set in the 1940s, the film follows the true story of Prince Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo, Selma) who was the heir to the Botswana throne and married Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike, HHhH), a white, English girl. The couple’s relationship drew a wide controversy at the time, particularly because interracial marriages were illegal in Khama’s own country, forcing Khama and Williams to live in London for six years.
The film was directed by Amma Asante (Belle) who joined the project last May. Oyelowo has been behind the project since the beginning after he read the book The Colour Bar about the story.
I was so struck by the level of challenge they faced simply for falling in love with each other that I became completely intoxicated with it.
The film is expected to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and release next fall. We’ll have more on the film as it develops.
