Entertainment Weekly has released the first image from director Martin Scorsese’s (The Wolf of Wall Street) upcoming movie Silence starring Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Adam Driver (While We’re Young), and Liam Neeson (Taken 3).
The image shows Garfield as Rodrigues, a young Catholic priest, comforting a man in Japan. The story follows Rodrigues and his fellow priest, Garupe (Driver), in their travels to feudal Japan to find their mentor (Neeson), as they attempt to spread the outlawed Christianity along the way. The movie is an adaptation of a novel by Shusaku Endo, with the script written by Scorsese collaborator Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York). Ken Watanabe (Godzilla) is also in the movie.
Scorsese has been quoted as saying this is a passion project of his that he’s been working to bring to the screen for more than 24 years. Production finally came together in 2013 as the cast filled out with Garfield, and Neeson following suit last year. Paramount, which distributed The Wolf of Wall Street, picked up the movie last summer.
Silence is set to be released in 2016, though no specific date has been announced.
