Disney has released the first footage of their new animated film Moana featuring their first Hawaiian princess of the same name (newcomer Auli’i Cravalho). The film also stars Dwayne Johnson (Furious 7) as the former demi-god Maui and Alan Tudyk (Frozen) in a yet-to-be announced role. The film follows Moana as she goes on a journey through Hawaiian mythology with Maui.
There isn’t much actual footage in the below video with exception to a brief shot of Moana on the beach along with some stills of Moana and Maui on a raft. This isn’t the first time a Disney film has had Hawaiian main characters as the 2D animated Lilo and Stitch centered on a Hawaiian family. Moana appears to be older than Lilo, however, following more along the lines of Disney’s other princess characters.
Back in 2013, Moana was first announced to release in 2018. Disney later moved the film to 2016. They have another animated feature planned for 2016 in the comedy Zootopia.
We’ll have more on Moana leading up to its November 23 release. In the meantime, you can watch the below clip.
