The standout indie film Charm City Kings, which previously debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, has been picked up by HBO Max.
The film was initially slated for a theatrical release on April 10th, but due to the coronavirus and social distancing, Sony Pictures was forced to cancel all film releases. This cancellation allowed HBO Max to pick up the rights for it to debut on their new streaming service.
Charm City Kings garnered lots of praise and recognition at Sundance, even winning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting award. This award recognized the film’s cast, which consisted of Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Grammy-nominated recording artist Meek Mill, Will Catlett, Donielle Hansley, Kezii Curtis, Chino, Lakeyria Doughty, and Teyonah Parris.
Charm City Kings chronicles the story of Mouse, a young man who desperately wants to join a legendary gang of Baltimore dirt bike riders, The Midnight Clique. Soon enough, the clique’s leader takes Mouse under his wing. Mouse then finds himself trapped between his old life and a world of drugs and violence. The film was directed by Angel Manuel Soto, with Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins, Chris Boyd and Kirk Sullivan penning the script.
HBO Max is set to debut on May 27th, but Charm City Kings has yet to announce an official release date yet.
