Acclaimed actresses Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren are making a return to the Fast & Furious franchise. Following an Instagram post made by Vin Diesel, the actor confirmed the two actresses would join the cast of the upcoming Fast & Furious 9 according to reports by Deadline.
Both actresses made their franchise debut in the 2017 installment Fate of the Furious. Theron portrayed a cyberterrorist named Cipher and Mirren played Magdalene Shaw who was the mother of Deckard portrayed by Jason Statham and Owen portrayed by Luke Evans. Mirren’s character will make an appearance in the pending Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw on August 2.
The two actresses will join John Cena who will be the latest acquisition to the franchise.
Justin Lin returns to direct the ninth installment of the franchise which will primarily be shot in London. Dan Casey wrote and adapted the screenplay. Fast & Furious 9 is expected to be released on May 22nd 2020. Diesel will produce under his One Race Films banner alongside Samantha Vincent. Lin will also serve as a producer for his Perfect Storm Entertainment company.
Diesel produced the five highest grossing films in the franchise over the past decade. The entire action franchise has generated more than $5.1 billion worldwide at the box office.
