While The Lion King (2019) is Disney’s last live-action theatrical remake, there are still more remakes set for later this year. This time however, the film- a remake of the 1955 animated classic, Lady and the Tramp– will be released for Disney’s own streaming service, Disney Plus. A series of photos showcasing the characters were just released today from People Magazine. You can view them here.
Unlike The Lion King, Disney isn’t creating CGI photorealistic animals for this project. Instead they’re going to have real dogs play the on-screen personas of the original film’s lovable canine characters. However, that won’t stop them from casting well known actors to play these parts. Lady will be voiced by Thor Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson while Tramp is being voiced by Parks and Recreations star Justin Theroux. Peg, the dog best known for singing He’s a Tramp, and her pound mate Bull will be voiced by musical star Janelle Monáe and Doctor Strange actor Benedict Wong respectively. Some of the original film’s most memorable side characters, Trusty and Jock, will also be in the remake, albeit with a few changes. Trusty will be voiced by Sam Elliot while Jock is getting gendered swapped for this new film, with Ashley Jenson providing the voice.
With these character photos released, many are expecting a trailer to accompany it soon. Then again, fans aren’t expecting anything too grand compared to the other live-action Disney remakes. Considering it’s going straight to the streaming service instead of theaters, it can be assumed Lady and the Tramp‘s budget is significantly lower compared to the average Disney remake. It’s still worth paying attention to how this new remake turns out, especially considering how it’s one of the first films Disney’s launching on its highly anticipated streaming service.
Lady and the Tramp is set to release on November 12th 2019.
