According to Deadline, Channing Tatum will be making his directorial debut with the new road trip comedy Dog. He will also be starring in the feature and will co-direct it with Reid Carolin. Tatum stars as Army Ranger Briggs, who takes a road trip with his Belgian Malinois Lulu to attend the funeral of his best friend, and Lulu’s handler.
Tatum and Carolin are teaming up with Peter Kiernan and Gregory Jacobs to produce this film, which will reunite Magic Mike franchise alums Tatum, Carolin, and Jacobs. Tatum starred in both and produced the first film with Carolin, who also wrote the film’s script. Jacobs would later direct its sequel, Magic Mike XXL. Tatum, Carolin, and Brett Rodriguez penned the Dog script together.
Tatum’s most recent acting credits include Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Logan Lucky, some voice roles in Smallfoot and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, and the upcoming Ryan Reynolds-led film, Free Guy. It has not been announced who will distribute Dog, as the film is gearing toward the American Film Market which runs November 6-13 in Santa Monica. Filming is expected to start in the spring or summer of 2020 and will most likely premiere sometime in 2021. Whether the film will get as much heat as Magic Mike remains to be seen.
