After a rather lackluster summer movie season, we finally head into awards season in the fall. Among these features to look forward to is Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women, a triumph of strong, multi-faceted female portraits. Joining Reichardt is frequent collaborator Michelle Williams, who previously starred in Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy and Meek’s Cutoff. Certain Women also stars Kristen Stewart (in the middle of “her moment”) and Laura Dern.
The Hollywood heavyweights star as three women whose lives intersect in a rural town in the United States. Williams stars as a recently married woman struggling to fix new marital problems when she and her husband try to persuade an elderly man to sell his sandstone. Stewart stars as a young lawyer, who inadvertently finds herself teaching a bi-weekly adult education class in her home. Dern stars as another lawyer who attempts to fix a hostage situation and calm her unhappy client. Certain Women received rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and is based on Maile Meloy’s short story collection, “Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It.”
Certain Women is first headed to the Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival before landing in theaters on Oct. 14. Watch the trailer below.
