The new film Black Bag stars Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as a married couple who are both spies. The two actors previously played opposites in Song to Song. Black Bag marks Steven Soderbergh’s new collaboration with both actors where he notoriously also acts as the cinematographer.
Michael Fassbender commented on the couple’s married life in the film as follows,
“They have a strong marriage. He feels like she’s in his corner. There’s a deep sort of respect and understanding for on another. So when this happens, for George, it’s like, where should his loyalty lie? With his country or with his wife? Spies lives can be isolating and lonely, and movies about them can be quite dour. And Steven was like, ‘No, not this one. It’s got to be sexy. It’s got to have style.'”
Cate Blanchett also reportedly enjoyed working opposite with Fassbender and is quoted as liking Soderbergh’s direction by saying,
“Reading it I just understood these characters, they have such distinct personalities, and the world was so easy to visualize. And it’s a mid-budget film that’s made for adults, which there’s hardly any of them out there. And very few filmmakers are better at doing those kind of smart, sophisticated stories than Steven.”
Black Bag was recently released yesterday on March 14, and being distributed in America by Focus Features. The trailer is available here:
