This last Saturday, the Independent Spirit awards took place. It was marked by the triumph of Everything Everywhere All at Once in several categories and by both a comedic and awkward moment starred by actress Cate Blanchett.
Sometimes actors need to draw a line. This time Blanchett refused to participate in one of host Hasan Minhaj’s jokes about click bait photos. The host asked the actress to make “unhinged expressions” for the cameras. However, Blanchett covered her face and hid under the table where she was seated. Indeed, an intelligent way to deny participation that made attendants laugh. The host did not know how to react and asked, “Is she coming out the other end?”. Then he moved on and made the same request to TÁR director Todd Field who followed Blanchet under the table too.
Insisting on making the joke work, the host asked someone else around to find Marisa Tomei nearby; he said to her: “Marisa Tomei, let’s do a thumbnail face!” her response was the same as Blanchett and Field’s.
Minhaj continued: “Regina Hall can we get a thumbnail face?” Hall also ducked under the table. After this, the host admitted his defeat and introduced the next presenter.
