This week it was reported that Cary Fukunaga is currently in talks to direct Universal’s upcoming historical film about the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The film will be based on the 2005 book Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima by Michael Walker, which covers the events preceding the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
The atomic bomb, called ‘Little Boy’, is expected to have killed at least 100,000 of the 300,000 people living in Hiroshima, and to have permanently damaged/injured countless others due to radiation. The film will cover the political and military decisions leading to the event, and most likely live in Hiroshima prior to the dropping of the bomb.
Fukunaga has a small connection to the material, given his father, a third generation Japanese-American, was born in a Japanese internment camp during the WWII.
Fukunaga has previously directed the entire first season of the Emmy-winning series True Detective, the 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre, and most recently wrote/directed 2013 Beasts of No Nation. He is currently working on multiple projects, including the Netflix series Maniac starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone.
