The fever pitch surrounding Captain America: Civil War prior to its theatrical opening (including warm and lots of “best of” calls from critics and fans alike) more than suggests that Marvel’s latest offering would make killing at the box office. It’s opening weekend then came and brought everything just slightly back down to earth. While a $179 million debut is nothing to sneeze at (and marked the fifth highest opening ever), it was a smidgen off last year’s summer season opener Avengers: Age of Ultron (which seemed to slightly underwhelm the consensus).
Well, Captain America: Civil War is proving its blockbuster status, having collected $206 million in its first five days of release and has a chance of becoming the highest grossing film of the summer (if not the year entirely). More good news on its box office return: the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed film (and Marvel’s thirteenth entry into their MCU) out-grossed Avengers: Age of Ultron a touch on both Monday and Tuesday, suggesting a grand life on repeat viewing may in store. The film ranks fifth as the fastest to reach the $200 barrier – only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron got their quicker. A domestic reach north of $400 seems firmly set.
Furthermore, with overseas receipts included Captain America: Civil War has earned over $700 million worldwide (already more than Captain America: The Winter Soldier and light years ahead of Captain America: The First Avenger) and seems poised to break the one billion barrier quite soon.
