Marvel‘s latest behemoth Captain America: Civil War doesn’t open in theaters until May 6th, yet already can hold bragging rights for it’s massive, and seemingly record-breaking, social media appearance. The latest trailer premiered Thursday and has since nearly blown up the web- a surprise first appearance of the new Spider-man in the trailer certainly helped on that end.
The number of views in it’s first 24 hours are pretty startling. The second trailer of Captain America: Civil War racketed 94.7 million views worldwide as of Friday afternoon, according to Entertainment Weekly. Here’s a breakdown of the feat in its first day of exposure:
- 22 million views on YouTube.
- 1.9 million views on Marvel’s UK feed.
- 17 million views on Marvel’s English-language Facebook page.
- 17 million views on Captain America’s individual Facebook page.
- 15,890 re-tweet from Marvel’s Twitter feed.
The numbers are pretty astonishing and exceed Avengers: Age of Ultron former daily record of 34 million views. All of which may point to a staggering opening weekend. Curiously, when Age of Ultron premiered last May to a box office take slightly below expectations (the film still earned a staggering $459 million domestically), it appeared that perhaps superhero fatigue might of been starting. Flash forward to Deadpool‘s record-breaking haul in February and Batman v. Superman‘s expected dominance at the end of the March and all that blather may be unfounded after all.
Captain America: Civil War appears to be one of the most dramatic Marvel entries thus far, as our once merry team of crime fighters are forced to take sides against one another. Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany all return to the fold. The film will also introduce Chadwick Boseman (as Black Panther) and Tom Holland (as Spidey). The film also boasts another record of Marvel: it’s the longest film in their canon with a running time of 2 hours and 27 minutes. Who’s excited?
