‘Captain America: Civil War’ Crosses $400 Million Domestically

It was a good weekend for Marvel (and an even better weekend for parent company Disney) as Captain America: Civil War topped $400 million at the North American box office over the weekend; the milestone occurred on Saturday. The epic showdown among over favorite avenging superheros is the highest grossing film of the year, both domestically and internationally, and the only title in 2016 to top the $400 million barrier thus far in North America.

With it’s $401.2 million total domestic tally as of Sunday (it’s 19th day of release), the film has earned a gargantuan $1.14 billion so far globally. Currently, Captain America: Civil War is leaps ahead of both standalone Captain America titles (The First Avenger topped at $176 million and The Winter Soldier earned $259 million) and the fourth highest grossing title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Iron Man 3 (2013). Civil War will top Iron Man 3 ($409 million) soon enough, though Age of Ultron may prove a bit of a challenge ($459 million).

The success of Civil War keeps the Marvel machine chugging along in what has been a somewhat disappointing summer otherwise for both superhero franchise (X-Men: Apocalypse) and sequels in general (Alice Through the Looking GlassTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows). Next up on Marvel’s plate in new entry Doctor Strange, due in theaters on November 4th.
