Cannes: ‘Son Of A Gun,’ Starring Ewan McGregor, Lands U.S. Distribution Deal with A24

Son Of A Gun has landed a distribution deal in the United States. A24 has picked up the rights to the Australian heist film helmed by promising first-timer Julius Avery, as reported by Variety.

Avery is an up and coming former commercials director from Australia, and he is no stranger to Cannes. His 2008 short film Jerrycan won the Cannes’ Jury Prize in addition to winning best short at AFI.

Son Of A Gun centers on a young criminal, played by Aussie Brenton Thwaites, who falls under the influence of Australia’s notorious and high-profile heist mastermind Brendan Lynch, played by McGregor.  Thwaites’ young criminal is promised the chance to get millions of dollars in gold to help Lynch break out of prison. As the heist goes wrong, the young criminal soon comes into conflict with his criminal mentor.

No word yet on the release date. The film is expected to open in Australia later this year.  We’ll see Thwaites appear as the dapper Prince Phillip alongside Angelina Jolie in Disney’s Maleficent due out May 30th.
