Can ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Defeat ‘Avatar’s Box Office Record?

Spider-Man: No Way Home tops this weekend’s box office as it has every weekend except one since its release in mid-December.

Those ticket sales boost the movie’s North American gross to $735 million, just $25 million shy of beating James Cameron’s Avatar ($760 million) for the number 3 spot as the third biggest movie ever in North America.

Now in its seventh weekend of release, the superhero sequel made $11 million from 3,765 North American venues, a 17% decline from last weekend. The Nor’easter assisted in that 17% decline as theaters across the Northeast including Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York, were all forced to close due to winter storm Kenan.

However, No Way Home managed to surpass Sony’s estimates for this weekend, proving once again that it is no ordinary blockbuster. It succeeded with help from other regions in North America, seeing 24% of its business from the West with 23% from the Southeast and 15% from South Central outside the snow zone.

It wasn’t a peachy day at the movies for other releases as the total weekend box office came in at an estimated $37.2M, the lowest three days since late September 2020. Though the snow is not totally at fault, there have not been any new wide releases as studios continue to delay releases in the face of Omicron. Sony even recently delayed their other comic book movie, Morbius, to April to eliminate the risk of a financial failure.

It looks like No Way Home is a titan at the cinemas that can’t be beaten.
