In an interview for Collider at SXSW 2025, meant to promote her reality TV show Idotka, Camila Mendes was asked about her role in the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie, slated for release in June of next year. When asked about her co-star, Nicholas Galitzine, who will play the central role of the toy box hero, He-Man, she briefly teased about Galitzine’s performance. “I feel like if I were to tell you that, it would completely give away a huge plot point, but I think it’d be his sense of humor. He’s very funny, very talented, and very funny,” Mendes answered.
Mendes later explained why she’s so excited to work on a film in this franchise, compared to a Marvel or DC film, as well as discussing why she took on the role of Teela in the movie, saying:
“Yeah, I mean, to be honest, I’ve always dreamed of being in a project like this, and there’s something that is so special about it because it doesn’t have the same fanbase as Marvel or DC. It feels like it’s a fresh superhero universe. It hasn’t really been reinvented in a long time. It’s exciting to create this world and in a less pressured environment, if that makes sense. Then also, I think the project itself is just really fun and funny and has layers and beautiful arcs and stories. I love Teela’s character so much, and I relate to her in so many ways that I can’t really talk about, but I think that’s all I can say about that.”
Director Travis Knight is helming this upcoming Masters of the Universe movie. Knight previously directed the Transformers prequel Bumblebee and stop-motion animated films for Lakia Studios: Kubo and the Two Strings and the upcoming Wildwood. On top of Camila Mendes and Nicholas Galitzine, the film will also star Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Jared Leto as Skeletor.
Masters of the Universe is being distributed by Amazon MGM Studios and will be released in theaters on June 5, 2026.
